Tilos: the island that decided to feed itself.

Already 100% powered by sun and wind, already a UNESCO-recognised model for zero waste. Now Tilos is closing the loop on food.

Tilos is small, even by Aegean standards. Around 500 year-round residents, 63 square kilometres of rock and herb-scented hillside, a single ferry line in winter. And yet, in the past decade, this island has become one of the most quietly radical places in Europe.

The energy revolution

In 2018, Tilos became the first island in the Mediterranean to run primarily on its own renewable energy — a hybrid wind and solar plant coupled with battery storage, designed under the EU TILOS project. On most days, the diesel generators sit idle. The island exports nothing and imports very little electricity.

The waste revolution

In 2022, with the Just Go Zero programme, Tilos became the first island in the world to commit to a circular waste model. Door-to-door collection, near-total sorting, recycling rates above 80%. Materials that used to be shipped to a mainland landfill now stay in the loop.

The missing third

Energy: solved. Waste: solved. Food: still imported. Every kilo of lettuce on Tilos arrives by truck and ferry, often three days old and three times the mainland price. This is the gap Chlora was built to close. A cluster of aeroponic Tower Farms on Tilos can produce, year-round, the leafy greens, herbs and fruiting crops that the island currently buys at a premium.

What self-sufficiency actually looks like

Self-sufficiency on Tilos is not a survivalist fantasy. It is a balance sheet. Every kilo of food grown on-island is a kilo not trucked from Athens, a euro retained in the local economy, a litre of diesel never burned by a ferry, a sheet of plastic never wrapped around a wilting cabbage. Multiply across an Aegean of 200 inhabited islands and the picture changes quickly.

Tilos already proved that an island can power itself. It is about to prove that an island can feed itself.
